"this monkey's gone to heaven" (The Pixies)
just heard the sad news that george best has died
i met him two years ago when i was working at a racecourse in Brighton
he still had it
the room was electirified when he walked in
he was the centre of gravity for about 600 people that day
in my short career as a waiter i never neglected more tables to look after (and just be around) one man
i'm a romantic, so heroes have always appealed to me, especially flawed ones
i'm sickened by elements in the media (and general public) that take the moral high ground on his life - the smug, judgemental fucks
yes, he self-destructed
yes, he blew his second chance
yes, things could have been different
no, that doesn't make his demise any less tragic
personally, i'll remember grainy old barely colour footage
and stories, lots of memories and stories
and one day in brighton
god bless

Nice tribute to George, Tony.
Obviously the man had enormous problems off the pitch but nobody could deny the impact that he had on soccer - or more importantly, people's memories of soccer. People who saw him play can remember the date, the time, the smells: anyone who makes an indelible impression like that is going to be mourned.
People who inspire with their talent are rare today and we should rememember George in that way.
In total agreement Mr.T. The idea that every second rate journalist/politician/media personality has the right to put on a sad face and ponder out loud to the cameras about "what george could have been if only he'd lived a different life" is sickening. What makes Best great is not only that he was a fabulous footballer, but that he was so human and not afraid to admit that he was as flawed as anyone else. The man had more energy and appetite for life in either of his big toes than most of the pontifciators could claim to have in their purer than snow souls.
